The number of damaged (nicked or broken) strands in a multistranded wire shall not [D1D2D3] exceed the limits given in Table 5-1.

There shall [A1D2D3] be no strand separation (birdcaging) greater than one strand diameter or beyond the outside diameter of the insulation. (Recommendations and requirements on wires used in high voltage applications are provided in 1.13.2.3.)
