The number of damaged (nicked or broken) strands in a multistranded wire shall not [D1D2D3] exceed the limits given in Table 5-1.

There shall be no strand separation (birdcaging) greater than one strand diameter or beyond the outside diameter of the insulation. (Recommendations and requirements on wires used in high voltage applications are provided in 1.13.2.3.)
